Are Porcelain Veneers Stain Resistant?

Porcelain veneers can significantly upgrade a patient’s smile and patients who choose this treatment want great long-term results in addition to fixing the immediate concerns. Therefore, many patients ask if porcelain veneers can become stained or discolored over time.

Porcelain is not porous the same way that tooth enamel is, so the material is largely resistant to staining caused by food or beverages. For this reason, porcelain veneers are a good option for concealing stains that do not respond to teeth whitening treatments, in addition to obscuring defects like chips and cracks, they do not darken over time.

At the same time, however, veneers themselves will not respond to any teeth whitening treatments, so if you want to brighten your smile, you need to do so before the veneers are bonded to your teeth.

In addition to being stain resistant, porcelain veneers have a number of other benefits. Although porcelain seems to be a fragile material, once the veneer is bonded to the tooth, the tooth retains its original strength.  Properly designed veneer restorations are the most predictable of all dental restorations. Be sure that you review your oral hygiene routine with the specialist who places your veneers to ensure that you’re taking all necessary steps to care for them.

Porcelain also shares many optical qualities with biological tooth enamel, which helps to give veneers a very natural appearance.

Veneers made from porcelain are useful for enhancing the smile’s aesthetics and concealing a wide variety of flaws. Furthermore, these devices are durable and stain-resistant.
